 The Saw

I will always remember the time when I got my cast off.  I had broken my leg on September 10th.  I wore the cast for about 6 weeks.  It all started when I was going to the hospital.  I had to sit in the waiting room for a couple of minutes until the doctor called me in.  I had to sit on the bed while they got this mini saw.  They said that it wouldn't cut my skin.  They even put the saw on their own hand for proof!  Then they began to saw the cast.  The saw touched me a couple of times, but all it did was burn just a little bit.  First, they sawed both sides of the cast.  Then they got this tool to pry open the cast.  I was a little scared because the doctor said the tool might pinch me.  Finally, when they got the cast open, I looked at my leg.  It was as small as my pinky!   My muscles no strength after being in the cast so long.  Then they took me into the x-ray room to make sure that nothing happened to my leg while it was in the cast.  After that, they said my leg was all ready to go and that I will be back walking and running in no time.  At first it was strange because it felt like I was still in the cast.  A few weeks later I am feeling totally back to normal.  I hope that if you every get a broken leg, you won't be afraid of the saw.

Two Assemblies!

This week we had two special assemblies.  One was all about safety, and the other was filled with magic.

Lieutenant DeRitis visited us to present his annual assembly on Fire Safety.  Here are some of the
things we learned about what to do in case of a fire or other emergency.
  • Make sure your family has a safe meeting place outside in case of fire.
  • Put Child Safety stickers on the window and bedroom door of all children in the family.
  • Stop, drop and roll if your clothes are on fire.  Cover your face to protect yourself.
  • Block smoke from under your door with a towel or clothing.
  • Make sure the door is not HOT with the back of your hand.
  • Never go back inside a burning place.
  • Sleep with your bedroom door closed.
  • Don't hide in your room.  Firemen need to find you.  Stay low to the floor.
  • Call 9-1-1 to get help.  Call from your house phone if you can so the computer knows where you are.
  • If you call from a cell phone, FIRST say your address!
Our second assembly was a Magic Show!  Joe Holiday came to show us how much Reading Rocks!

Welcome to Room 505!

Our first two days together went very well!  We have 22 students in our class, with 14 boys and 8 girls.  Monday will be the start of our first full week together.  We will have two items of homework each night; math and spelling.  Please check your child's Home Folder and sign the Homework Planner every night.

Math Unit 1 begins with place value, comparing numbers, and reading/writing numbers into the hundred-thousands.  Check out the MacMillan website to explore Chapter 1 and beyond.  You will find readiness quizzes, virtual tutors, test practice, games etc. to support the skills we will be learning in class.  Each chapter this year will include 1-2 quizzes as well as an end-of-chapter test.

Rocket Math will also be a part of our daily routine.  We will begin in the Addition Phase, moving on to Subtraction before too long.  Multiplication will start after Thanksgiving.  You will see links in the right sidebar here for Rocket Math goodies.  You can access the tests, save your own copy, and print for practice at home!  Please make studying the basic facts a part of your routine each night.

We will have a spelling pretest on Monday.  Each child will have a list of ten words.  These lists are differentiated, or custom made for each child.  The homework routine will be as follows:

Monday- 3x each
Tuesday- ABC/Reverse ABC order
Wednesday- Spelling Sentences
Thursday- Handout/study for test
Friday- Spelling test in class

I hope to see all our parents at Open House/Back to School Night, Thursday September 12th at 6:30pm.  We will be meeting in the cafetorium, with classroom presentations to follow.  I am looking forward to a great year together!

Savannah's Big Photo Day at the Phillies Game

I was so excited to go to the Phillies game, especially because today was
take a picture day on the field!  My Dad, Mom and I arrived extra early
to the game so that we could go down on the field and get close up pictures of
the players. We stood right in front of the rope and watched
all the players go by, we saw and took pictures of Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Carlos Ruiz, just to name a few.  After waiting 2 hours in the hot, 92 degree weather
and sweating to death we finally got to go up to our seats and get something
to eat.  When we got there, we were so happy to find out that our seats
were covered by a awning!  We watched the game, ate lots of fun treats
and bought souvenirs.   The Phillies lost but it was still a great game!  I love when
I get to go to a Phillies game with my family!!

IRISH DANCE

I do Irish dance every Tuesday. I started Irish dance when I was 6 years old.  The first dance I learned was the REAL.  It took a while for me to learn that dance.  Every Tuesday we go over REAL, LIGHT jIG and SLIP jig!  They are the first 3 dances you need to learn.  In Irish dance there is Irish 1, Irish 2 and Irish 3.  I am in Irish 2.  When you get in Irish2 you get to learn hard shoe.  Hard shoe is sort of like tap shoes and when you do hard shoe you have to dance together because if someone was out of place you can hear it.  Every year we have a recital.  This year’s theme is Hawaii.  Our costumes are turquoise with purple and green hanging off.  We are supposed to be mermaids!  I hope after you read this article you will join Irish dance too!

Introducing Javian's Sister!

My sister's name is Jay'Lynn Elizabeth.  She was born December 11, 2012 at 8:28 am.  She weighed 6lbs 2 oz and was 19 inch long.  She has a full head of crazy hair.  When she left the hospital she weighed 5lbs 8 oz.  We took her to the doctor a week later, and she weighed 6lbs 6oz.

Having a new baby sister is a lot of responsibility. I like to hold her and feed her.  I get the best pigs out of her, and we like to lay together and watch tv.  I read my RAH book to her every night. I like to play with her on the play mat and make her smile. She is a good sleeper and doesn't wake me up. My mom took her to the doctor last week and she weighs 9lbs 4oz and is 21 inch long.  Her head is 15 inches around. I will ask my mom when the weather is nice and everyone is not sick to bring her to school one day so everyone can meet her.

My Trip to Orlando by Dev

My Trip to Orlando Florida

Last July we went to Orlando Florida with my cousins and my dad’s friend dropped us of at the airport. When we sat on the plane I asked my dad hoe long was the plane ride he said about 2 hours.  Then I went to sleep with my cousin and we were there already. Then we rented a car and went to get a hotel and rented a room for us. Then we went to Sea World and some stores. Then we saw a lots of sea animal shows. Then we went home and would go to sleep early because we would go so early in the morning to the rides and shows. Then we went to universal studios but there were not any rides but I thought I could go in the Harry Potter ride but I could not only my cousins and my dad and sister but my mom stayed with me and we went to Jurassic park to a fun ride. That was my trip to Orlando Florida.
